McLaren team principal dismisses Max Verstappen as a credible title threat

The 2025 F1 season has begun with a fascinating twist, with Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Max Verstappen each winning the opening three races. McLaren’s performance has been impressive, but despite that, Max Verstappen’s tenacity and ability to maximize the potential of his car has kept him in close contention for the title, just one point behind Norris.

Andrea Stella, McLaren’s team principal, highlighted the importance of consistently scoring points, especially when a win isn’t on the cards. He emphasized that McLaren’s better car performance should pay off in the long run, and while Verstappen is currently making a difference himself, it would be difficult for him to keep up across the entire 24-race season without having the best car.

Verstappen, on the other hand, was less optimistic about challenging McLaren at every track, noting that Suzuka’s unique characteristics helped him manage the race but that upcoming venues, like Bahrain, might not offer the same opportunities for Red Bull.

The battle for the title looks set to intensify, with Verstappen, now just one point behind Norris, likely to push harder in Bahrain. If Verstappen can secure a win there, the title fight will be wide open, reshaping the dynamics of the 2025 season.

What do you think of the season so far—do you believe Verstappen can keep up with McLaren’s pace?
