RIP Sir’: Usain Bolt Receives Track and Field Community’s Support as He Mourns Father’s Passing at 68

Wellesley Bolt, father of legendary sprinter Usain Bolt, passed away on March 31, 2025, at the age of 68 after a prolonged illness. He died at a medical facility in Kingston, Jamaica.

A respected figure in his hometown of Sherwood Content, Trelawny, Wellesley operated a small grocery shop and was affectionately known as “Gideon” within the community. He played a pivotal role in Usain’s early athletic development, reportedly encouraging him to focus on track and field over cricket due to the politics involved in the latter sport.

Throughout Usain’s illustrious career, Wellesley maintained a low profile but was a constant source of support, often seen cheering from the sidelines during major championships. He is survived by his children Usain, Sadiki, and Christine Bolt-Hylton.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed his condolences, acknowledging Wellesley’s significant influence on Usain’s success and highlighting the deep bond within the Bolt family. Minister of Culture Olivia Grange also paid tribute, noting Wellesley’s unwavering support and guidance that helped shape a legacy inspiring the world.

The passing of Wellesley Bolt is a profound loss to his family, the community of Sherwood Content, and the broader athletics world. His legacy endures through the remarkable achievements of his son, Usain, and the inspiration he provided to many.
