Deion Sanders Could Be a Contender for Giants or Dolphins Head Coach Jobs
Deion Sanders could emerge as a potential candidate for the head coach positions with the New York Giants or the Miami Dolphins if either team underperforms in the 2025 season. A recent report outlines the cost of breaking his lucrative contract with Colorado should one of these teams seek his services.
Pressure on Brian Daboll and Mike McDaniel
There is considerable pressure on the New York Giants’ head coach, Brian Daboll, heading into this season. After a promising start with the team, including a playoff berth and an upset victory over the Vikings in the Wild Card Round three years ago, the Giants have seen a sharp decline. They have posted a disappointing 9-25 record in the last two seasons. Additionally, rumors of dissatisfaction among players and staff have placed Daboll in a precarious position, with many viewing him as one of the hottest seats in the NFL.
Meanwhile, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel may also be at risk if the team underperforms this season. While McDaniel has had only one losing season over the past three years, his strong support for the injury-prone quarterback Tua Tagovailoa could backfire if the Dolphins fail to contend for an AFC Championship. If that happens, McDaniel could be the one to lose his job.
Deion Sanders Linked to Giants and Dolphins Head Coach Search
A major name being linked to both the Giants and Dolphins for a potential coaching search is Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. However, Sanders’ situation is complicated by his recent contract extension at Colorado, which makes it financially challenging for any team to hire him away before the end of the season. Sanders signed a new five-year, $54 million deal, making him one of the highest-paid college football coaches. This contract includes a hefty buyout clause for any professional team wanting to bring him back to the NFL.
Cost to Buy Out Sanders’ Contract
According to a new report, if Sanders were to leave Colorado before December 31st of this year for an NFL or college position, it would cost either team $12 million in liquidated damages. If he were to leave before December 31, 2026, the fee would drop to $10 million. This buyout fee continues to decrease as the years go on, with $6 million in 2027, $4 million in 2028, and $3 million before December 31, 2029.
Giants or Dolphins Could Pay $10 Million for Sanders
While it’s possible the Giants could decide to part ways with Daboll before the end of this calendar year, they would likely only engage with Sanders early in 2026, making the $10 million buyout more likely. Therefore, if the Giants or Dolphins pursue Sanders as their next head coach, it will be a costly endeavor for whichever team moves forward with him.
