Luisangel Acuña has secured a spot on the New York Mets’ Opening Day roster, a decision finalized late Wednesday afternoon after David Stearns mentioned that the team would monitor players who might become available. Acuña’s versatility played a key role in this decision, as he can cover multiple infield positions. He is expected to platoon with Brett Baty, starting against left-handed pitchers, with Baty likely starting against right-handed pitchers. This means Acuña could be in the lineup on Opening Day in Houston to face Framber Valdez.

Acuña’s ability to play second base, shortstop, and even third base or the outfield provides the Mets with significant flexibility. This is especially crucial since he is the only backup option for shortstop on the roster. In case Francisco Lindor faces an injury or needs a rest, Acuña is ready to step in, as he did in September 2024 when Lindor’s back bothered him. His speed is another asset; Acuña stole 40 bases in Triple-A Syracuse in 2024 and a combined 57 bases in 2023 with Double-A Frisco and Binghamton, making him a valuable addition to the Mets’ lineup, which has been in need of more speed.
Luisangel Acuña has shown some rough edges this spring, but he’s on the cusp of the Opening Day roster regardless.
Why hasn’t Acuña been consistent in the minors and spring training?

Acuña showed his potential during the Mets’ playoff push last season, hitting .308 with three home runs and six RBIs over 14 games. He also gained valuable playoff experience as a defensive replacement in late-game situations.
For now, Acuña and Baty will compete for a regular spot on the roster until Jeff McNeil returns from a right oblique strain. It remains to be seen whether Carlos Mendoza, the Mets’ manager, will use a platoon system based on opposing pitchers or opt to go with whichever player is performing best.
