Would Kayvon Thibodeaux be traded to the New York Giants

A potential Kayvon Thibodeaux trade to the Detroit Lions is an interesting hypothetical, but it raises several questions about both teams’ long-term plans.

Why Would the Giants Consider Trading Thibodeaux?

Thibodeaux, the fifth overall pick in 2022, has shown flashes of elite pass-rushing ability but hasn’t quite lived up to expectations consistently. While he did notch 11.5 sacks in 2023, his overall PFF pass-rush grade has only exceeded 70.0 once, indicating that his play hasn’t always been dominant.

With the Giants potentially facing a rebuild and financial decisions looming—especially with Dexter Lawrence, Brian Daboll’s QB decision, and other roster needs—PFF suggests that New York could capitalize on Thibodeaux’s trade value rather than committing to a long-term extension or his fifth-year option.

Why the Lions Make Sense as a Trade Partner

Detroit, coming off an NFC Championship Game appearance, desperately needs another impact pass rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions ranked 23rd in sack percentage (6.3%) in 2024, and their pass rush struggled when Hutchinson was double-teamed.

Thibodeaux could thrive in Aaron Glenn’s defense, which has built a reputation for maximizing talent in the front seven. Plus, with the Lions having ample cap space and a strong young core, they could afford to extend him beyond his rookie deal.

Likelihood of a Trade?

While Thibodeaux hasn’t been officially linked to trade talks, the Giants’ direction under Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will dictate their willingness to part ways with a young edge rusher. If they believe Thibodeaux won’t reach his ceiling in New York, trading him before his value diminishes could be a smart move.

However, pass rushers are premium assets, and moving on from a 24-year-old former top-five pick would require a significant return—likely at least a second-round pick or a package of draft capital. The Lions, on the brink of Super Bowl contention, might just be willing to make that move.
