GM Mike Borgonzi Does the Unthinkable as Titans Double Down on Cam Ward Push Amid $122M Splash

Cam Ward’s Final Stop at Miami’s Pro Day Before Entering the NFL Draft

Miami’s promising start to the 2024 college football season ultimately ended in disappointment after losing two of its last three games, costing the team a playoff berth. However, one major highlight remains for the program: quarterback Cam Ward. The transfer portal acquisition left a lasting legacy, setting the record for the most touchdown passes in NCAA Division I history. Now, as he prepares for the NFL, he is making one final stop in Miami for the school’s Pro Day—an event that has drawn significant attention, especially from the Tennessee Titans.

Tennessee Titans Eyeing Cam Ward as the No.1 Pick

Since Ward opted out of participating in the NFL Combine drills in Indianapolis, his Pro Day performance holds even greater weight. His stock has been rising among draft analysts, with growing speculation that he could be the first overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The Titans, who hold that coveted selection, are taking a thorough approach to their evaluation.

To that end, the organization has sent an extensive delegation to Miami, including head coach Brian Callahan, team president Burke Nihill, and general manager Mike Borgonzi. Their presence signals serious interest, but what has caught even more attention is the inclusion of their in-house media teams. This has fueled speculation that the Titans are preparing promotional content in anticipation of selecting Ward. The report, originally revealed by a journalist covering the Cleveland Browns—the team picking right after Tennessee—sparked a debate among Browns fans who hope the Titans look elsewhere with their top pick.

Tennessee’s Quarterback Struggles and the Case for Ward

The Titans have been stuck in a difficult position within the AFC, largely due to their inability to secure a long-term answer at quarterback. In a conference filled with elite talent at the position, their struggles have been magnified. While the team could consider drafting an elite defensive player such as edge rusher Abdul Carter or two-way star Travis Hunter, the growing consensus is that addressing the quarterback position is the priority.

Ward already revitalized a college football program; now the question is whether he can do the same for an NFL franchise. The Titans’ actions suggest they believe he can.

Tennessee’s Offseason Moves Suggest They Are Preparing for Ward’s Arrival

If the Titans plan to select and start a rookie quarterback, they must build a strong supporting cast around him. Their offseason moves indicate they are doing just that.

A major investment has been made in the offensive line, with the team signing tackle Dan Moore to a massive $82 million contract. Additionally, they bolstered the unit by bringing in veteran guard Kevin Zeitler.

Special teams and defense have also been addressed. Kicker Joey Slye, formerly of the New England Patriots, was signed to replace veteran Nick Folk. Slye has an 81.7% career field goal percentage and has made 89.6% of his extra point attempts, including a career-long 63-yard field goal last season. His signing is primarily an age-based upgrade, as he is 11 years younger than Folk.

On the defensive side, Tennessee added linebacker Cody Barton and safety Xavier Woods. These acquisitions, along with their offensive investments, indicate the team is spending significantly to create a more competitive roster.

Could Tennessee Be Creating a Smokescreen?

While the Titans appear heavily interested in Ward, some believe their actions could be a strategic move. Bringing their full media team to Miami might be an effort to make other teams believe they are locked in on selecting Ward, potentially leading to a trade offer for the No.1 pick.

While trading down is a possibility, it would mean passing on a quarterback widely viewed as the best in this year’s draft class. Whether the Titans truly intend to select Ward or are using their interest as leverage remains to be seen. The coming weeks will provide more clarity on their draft strategy.
