Ohio State’s Quarterback Battle: Julian Sayin Emerges as a Strong Contender
The Ohio State Buckeyes are in the midst of an intense quarterback competition as spring practices unfold. With Will Howard heading to the NFL draft, head coach Ryan Day faces a crucial decision in naming the next starting quarterback. One of the key players in this battle is former Alabama transfer, Julian Sayin. Sayin, who transferred after Nick Saban’s retirement, is joined by returning quarterback Lincoln Kienholz and five-star freshman Tavien St. Clair in the competition for the position.
According to On3.com’s Pete Nakos, Sayin is already standing out in spring practices, with reports indicating that he is generating the most excitement among the three contenders. “The Buckeyes are only in their second spring practice, but rave reviews continue to pour in about Julian Sayin from winter workouts,” Nakos wrote. “The former five-star recruit transferred from Alabama to Ohio State and, despite seeing limited playing time in 2024, has impressed with his skillset.”

Sources have specifically praised Sayin’s quick release, and one NFL combine source even noted that his arm is “the real deal.” These assessments have fueled growing confidence that Sayin may be the frontrunner in the battle for the starting role.
Sayin has openly expressed his admiration for Will Howard’s leadership during Ohio State’s national championship run. “Will was a really great leader for this team and it was fun to watch,” Sayin said. “He was someone that everyone could relate to and liked by everyone. I think if you asked around the Woody, everyone would have good things to say about Will Howard. So I think that’s something I’m trying to take on in my approach.”
In addition to his football skills, Sayin’s NIL value is projected to be $1.1 million, a figure that could increase significantly if he secures the starting job. Given the current landscape of college football and the transfer portal, fans should not be surprised if Ryan Day waits until closer to the season to make a final decision on who will start at quarterback.
