Giants Ditch Aaron Rodgers for Ex-Browns QB as Mike Tomlin Gets One Step Closer to Signing 4x MVP

The New York Giants are finally addressing their biggest issue: the quarterback position. In football, solving the most crucial problem often leads to other challenges falling into place. When Daniel Jones was unavailable, the team finished 30th in the league. Now, heading into the 2025 season, the Giants have made an unexpected move at quarterback—choosing a younger player over well-known veterans like Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, and Joe Flacco.

Giants’ Surprise QB Signing

Recent reports had suggested that the Giants were likely to sign either Wilson or Flacco. However, this speculation turned out to be incorrect. Instead, the team has finalized a two-year, $8 million deal with former Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston. The contract includes incentives that could push the total value up to $16 million.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, multiple sources confirmed the agreement between Winston and the Giants. The signing represents a shift in strategy, favoring a younger and potentially more durable quarterback over older, more experienced options.

The Case for Jameis Winston

At 31 years old, Winston is significantly younger than the other quarterbacks the Giants were linked to—Rodgers (41) and Wilson (36). In a league where athleticism plays a critical role, age can make a difference. Winston also demonstrated his ability to perform last season, particularly in a standout Week 13 game against the Denver Broncos, where he threw for 497 yards.

His recent visit to the Giants’ facility likely played a key role in finalizing the agreement. Winston had been looking for another opportunity to play in the league and had even taken a temporary role as a reporter in New Orleans earlier in the year.

What’s Next for Aaron Rodgers?

With Winston joining the Giants, attention has now shifted to Aaron Rodgers, who has remained unusually quiet about his plans for the 2025 season. Following the end of the 2024 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers appeared to have a stable quarterback situation with Wilson and Justin Fields on the roster. However, free agency has shaken things up—Fields has joined the New York Jets, and the Steelers are now looking at Rodgers as a potential replacement for Wilson.

Reports indicate that Rodgers recently visited the Steelers’ facility, where he met with head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for an extensive six-hour discussion. While there is no confirmation yet, his meeting with key members of the coaching staff suggests serious interest from both sides.

Rodgers had previously expressed a desire to remain with the Jets, but the team’s front office was unwilling to accommodate his request. Since then, rumors have linked him to multiple teams, including the Minnesota Vikings. However, he has yet to publicly confirm his next move.

If Rodgers does join the Steelers, he will face high expectations. He has previously praised Tomlin, calling him a unique coach with “special sauce.” As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, the Steelers appear willing to wait for Rodgers to make a decision, while fans eagerly follow each update regarding his future.
