Yale is ready to take on the Aggies

Yale head coach James Jones expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete against Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. While acknowledging the strength of the Aggies, particularly under head coach Buzz Williams, Jones noted that his team had already faced tough competition this season, including a close loss to Purdue. He believes that playing against strong teams like Purdue has shown the Bulldogs that they can compete with anyone, especially on a neutral court. Jones emphasized the importance of matchups and expressed optimism that Yale could hold its own against Texas A&M.

The game presents an intriguing contrast between the Aggies’ tough, physical defense and Yale’s sharp-shooting offense. Both teams are known for their rebounding prowess, with Texas A&M boasting a particularly tenacious style. Jones recognized the Aggies’ physicality and their relentless pursuit of the ball, but he was confident that Yale could match up well, especially in rebounding.

Yale is no stranger to upsets in the NCAA Tournament. Last year, as a 13-seed, the Bulldogs defeated 4-seed Auburn in a thrilling 78-76 first-round victory. Guard John Poulakidas pointed out that this win gives the team confidence heading into their game against Texas A&M. Although the Aggies present a different challenge than Auburn, the Bulldogs know they are capable of competing at the highest level, which drives their preparation and excitement for the opportunity.

Poulakidas, who leads the team with 19.2 points per game, is part of a team that excels in 3-point shooting, hitting nearly 39% from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs are aware that one of Texas A&M’s weaknesses this season has been defending the 3-point shot, and they plan to exploit this in their game. Poulakidas acknowledged that Texas A&M’s identity is rooted in its aggressive offensive rebounding and strong defense, often relying on a chaotic defensive scheme that disrupts opponents. However, Yale’s coaching staff has prepared the team by studying how other successful teams have dealt with such defense.

Despite their lack of height, with only one player over 6-foot-7 in their rotation, Yale is ranked 18th in defensive rebounding and believes it can compete with Texas A&M, which is the top-ranked team in offensive rebounding. Forward Nick Townsend emphasized that the Bulldogs are focused on battling on the glass with the Aggies and are fully prepared for the challenge. Now, it’s a matter of executing their game plan and fighting for every rebound on the court.
