Leeds United’s Isaac Schmidt has earned his first call-up to the Switzerland national team under manager Murat Yakin for the upcoming international break. The left-back admitted he was caught off guard by the selection, sharing that he was surprised when he received an unfamiliar phone call. When he answered, the voice on the other end introduced himself as Murat Yakin, speaking in German.
Swiss outlet Blick highlights that Schmidt’s playing style and versatility make him a unique addition to the squad. The 25-year-old is capable of playing on either flank, both in a traditional back four and as a wing-back in a three-man defense. These upcoming friendlies against Northern Ireland and Luxembourg will serve as a test for Yakin to determine whether Schmidt can develop into a long-term option for the national team.
Schmidt moved to Leeds United from Swiss side St. Gallen on the final day of the summer transfer window. However, his playing time in England has been limited, featuring in only 205 minutes across nine appearances. In contrast, he accumulated 524 minutes of playing time for St. Gallen earlier this season before making the move to England.
Despite the lack of minutes on the pitch, Schmidt believes he has made significant progress training under Leeds United manager Daniel Farke. He emphasized the higher intensity and quality of training at Leeds compared to his previous club. While he is not a regular starter yet, he has adapted to the increased pace of the game. He expressed that had he been called up to the national team eight months ago, he might not have been prepared to meet the required intensity in training.
Schmidt is contracted with Leeds United until 2028, and although he has had a limited role so far, the club has reassured him that he is part of their long-term plans. According to him, Leeds have outlined a clear vision for his development and see potential in him to eventually become a regular starter.
Adjusting to English football has been a challenge for Schmidt, as he arrived at Elland Road just before the transfer deadline. He acknowledged that settling into a new club takes time, but he remains patient and is waiting for his opportunity to prove himself.
At Leeds, Schmidt primarily plays as a left-back, a position currently occupied by Junior Firpo, who has been a regular choice this season. With Firpo’s contract set to expire in June, there is a possibility that Schmidt could step into a more prominent role next season if the current first-choice left-back departs.
