Exeter Chiefs have officially announced the signing of South African hooker Joseph Dweba from the Stormers, making him their second confirmed acquisition ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Dweba has been a key player for the Stormers since joining them in 2022, showcasing his talents in both the United Rugby Championship and the Investec Champions Cup. He has also earned six caps for South Africa’s national team, the Springboks, after making his international debut against Argentina in 2021.

The 29-year-old expressed his excitement about the move, highlighting the opportunity to be part of something significant in the club’s future. He stated that joining Exeter Chiefs aligns with his ambitions and offers him the chance to contribute to a promising project.

A Proven Talent with International Experience

Born in Carletonville, Dweba has an extensive rugby background. He represented South Africa at the U18 level before progressing to the country’s U20 national team. His professional career began with the Cheetahs, where he played from 2016 to 2020. After that, he spent two seasons in France with Bordeaux-Bègles in the Top 14 before returning to South Africa to play for the Stormers.

The Chiefs’ Director of Rugby emphasized the value that Dweba will bring to the squad. He highlighted the hooker’s vast experience, physical presence, and ability to make an impact in set-piece situations and general play. The club believes Dweba’s dynamic playing style and personality will make him a fan favorite.

The director also praised Dweba’s leadership qualities, noting that while he has already achieved a great deal in his career, he still has plenty of rugby left to play. The signing is seen as a crucial step in strengthening the squad as Exeter Chiefs aim to establish themselves as a top-tier team in the Premiership in the coming seasons.
