Mauricio Pochettino Expresses Desire for Tottenham Return Amid U.S. Coaching Role
Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has reiterated his desire to return to the north London club at some point in the future.
The 53-year-old Argentine previously managed Spurs between 2014 and 2019, guiding the team to significant milestones, including a second-place Premier League finish in 2016, a League Cup final appearance in 2015, and a memorable run to the Champions League final in 2019. Despite his achievements, he was dismissed in November 2019 and later went on to coach Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.
Currently, Pochettino serves as the head coach of the United States national team, a role he took on in September. Speaking to Sky Sports, he reflected on his time at Tottenham and his enduring connection with the club.
> “When I left the club, I always said in interviews that I would like to return to Tottenham one day. Even now, after five or six years, I still feel that way in my heart.”
While he acknowledged that his current focus is on the U.S. national team, he left the door open for a future reunion with Spurs.
Strong Relationship with Daniel Levy
Despite being sacked by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, Pochettino insists that their professional split did not damage their personal relationship.
> “After nearly six years together, with all the ups and downs and emotions, it was tough. But we parted ways on good terms. Professionally, we had to separate, but personally, we have always maintained a very good relationship.”
Reflections on Chelsea Tenure and Departure
Pochettino spent the 2023-24 season managing Chelsea, leading them to the EFL Cup final, the FA Cup semi-finals, and a sixth-place Premier League finish before leaving by mutual consent in May. He admitted that the decision to part ways was the best for both sides.
> “When something doesn’t work, it’s better to stop, reflect, and explore other opportunities. It was the right decision for both parties, and I think we were both happy with the outcome.”
Turning Down England and Embracing the U.S. Role
After leaving Chelsea, Pochettino was linked with the England national team job before Thomas Tuchel was eventually appointed. However, he explained that the timing was not right for him to take on the role.
> “It’s a privilege to be considered for the England job, but sometimes timing isn’t in your favor. You may be available, but the opportunity passes.”
Instead, he embraced the challenge of leading the U.S. national team, particularly with the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place on American soil.
> “Coaching the USA ahead of a home World Cup was too great an opportunity to pass up. After many years in club football, it felt like the right time to challenge ourselves in a new way. When the offer came, it was an easy decision to say ‘yes’.”
Although his focus remains on his current role, Pochettino’s remarks suggest that a future return to Tottenham remains a strong possibility.
