Dante Fowler Jr. is making his return to the Dallas Cowboys, and longtime Cowboys fan and sports analyst Skip Bayless couldn’t be happier. On Friday, reports confirmed that the veteran pass-rusher had signed a one-year, $8 million contract to rejoin the team he played for in 2022 and 2023.
Skip Bayless Celebrates Fowler’s Return
FINALLY: A COWBOY FREE-AGENT MOVE I CAN APPLAUD … Dante Fowler Jr. returns! No, he never lived up to being the 3rd overall pick but he’s been far more productive than all the other high-pick busts Jerry has added. Always liked his motor/savvy. AND he’s no longer a Commander!

Bayless took to social media to express his excitement, praising the move as one of the Cowboys’ better free-agent decisions. He acknowledged that while Fowler never quite lived up to being the third overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, he has been more productive than some of the other high-profile signings under Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Bayless also took a jab at the Washington Commanders, Fowler’s most recent team, emphasizing that Fowler is now back in Dallas.
Fowler’s Performance with the Commanders
During his time with Washington, Fowler played in all 17 games, starting seven. He recorded 39 tackles (25 solo), 10.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a 67-yard interception return for a touchdown—showing he still has plenty left in the tank as a pass-rusher.
How Fowler Fits in Dallas’ Defense
Bringing Fowler back is a strategic move for the Cowboys, who needed a veteran presence after DeMarcus Lawrence’s departure to the Seattle Seahawks. Although primarily a situational player throughout his career, Fowler has excelled in rotational roles, and that is expected to continue in Dallas’ 3-4 defensive scheme.
With Micah Parsons and rookie Marist Liufau projected as the starting edge rushers, Fowler will provide valuable depth and experience. NFL analyst Mike Fisher noted that while elite pass-rushers are signing deals worth over $35 million annually, Fowler remains a bargain signing for a team that knows how to utilize him effectively.
Fowler’s First Stint in Dallas
In his previous two seasons with the Cowboys, Fowler played exclusively as a rotational pass-rusher. Over 37 games, including the playoffs, he recorded 41 tackles (30 solo), 10 sacks, five pass deflections, and three forced fumbles. His return ensures that Dallas retains a reliable veteran option in its defensive front as it gears up for the 2024-25 season.
