Report: Michigan Football hiring assistant coach with ties to Lou Esposito

The Michigan Wolverines have made a new addition to their coaching staff, as head coach Sherrone Moore has brought in David Denham as an assistant defensive line coach. The news was initially reported by 247Sports and later confirmed by Denham himself on social media.

Denham had recently accepted a role as the defensive tackles coach at Charlotte in January but has now opted to join Michigan’s staff. While the move is somewhat lateral, the opportunity to work with top-tier talent in one of college football’s strongest conferences was too appealing to pass up.

Prior to his brief time at Charlotte, Denham served as the defensive line coach at Western Michigan from 2020 to 2024. During his final year there, he also took on the role of recruiting coordinator. He worked closely with Lou Esposito, who was the defensive coordinator at Western Michigan, and together they played a key role in developing NFL prospects such as Marshawn Kneeland and Braden Fiske.

Denham’s coaching career includes experience beyond Western Michigan. He previously worked as the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator at the University of Indianapolis (UIndy) and also had coaching stints at Wabash College, Saint Joseph’s College (before its closure), and Rose-Hulman.

As a player, Denham started his collegiate football career as a linebacker at Tiffin University in the early 2000s before transferring to Ball State in 2003. He hails from Indianapolis, Indiana.
