Leeds United, currently leading the Championship table, will be without Max Wober and captain Ethan Ampadu for their upcoming match against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday. Following a hard-fought victory over Millwall on Wednesday night, which propelled them past Sheffield United into the top spot and helped them move on from their recent setback against Portsmouth, manager Daniel Farke indicated that Joe Rothwell might be a doubt for the fixture in West London.
Rothwell played a crucial role in Leeds’ win over Millwall, controlling the midfield and adding an attacking edge to a game where the opposition defended deep. Making only his second start in seven league matches, the Bournemouth loanee dictated play effectively. However, he was substituted shortly before stoppage time due to some knee stiffness.
Despite this concern, Farke has provided assurance that all players who featured in Wednesday’s match should be available for the game against QPR. Rothwell is included in this group, but the coach still faces a decision on whether to start him or opt for the more defensive-minded Ilia Gruev in midfield.
In addition, Leeds are expected to have full-back Isaac Schmidt available after he resumed training on Thursday. Schmidt was absent from the squad against Millwall due to illness rather than injury.
Looking ahead to the game against QPR, Farke acknowledged the challenge of playing three matches in six days, with signs of fatigue already showing in the team during their previous fixtures. Even Dan James, usually one of the quickest players on the pitch, seemed to lack his usual speed. Given the tight schedule, Farke may consider rotating his squad.
Potential changes could see Willy Gnonto and Largie Ramazani being given more playing time after their recent limited roles. Mateo Joseph is also hoping for a starting opportunity. Ilia Gruev, whom Farke recently praised for his effectiveness in tough away games, might also be included in the lineup.
Farke admitted that the short recovery time between matches makes this fixture particularly challenging, with just over 60 hours of rest between games, compared to the 80 hours they had after the Portsmouth match. The added factor of travel further complicates the situation.
As a result, the final selection for the starting XI will likely be made at the last moment—either on Friday evening or even on the morning of the game. Farke noted that while he values the medical staff’s advice, the ultimate decision rests with him, and he takes full responsibility for the choices he makes regarding the squad.
