49ers News: Kyle Shanahan Stuck With $77M Burden After Purging Deebo Samuel, Kyle Juszczyk and Co

San Francisco 49ers Overhaul Roster Amid Financial Struggles – Smart Move or Costly Gamble?

After finishing the season with a disappointing 6-11 record, the San Francisco 49ers have undergone a massive shake-up, starting with the firing of defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. This move marked the beginning of a dramatic roster overhaul, with the team making major coaching and player personnel changes in an effort to reset.

Key Departures and Unexpected Coaching Exit

One of the first major hits came in February, when quarterbacks coach Brian Griese unexpectedly decided to leave coaching altogether. Shortly after, the team turned its attention to the roster, making several high-profile player moves. One of the most notable was the trade of wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

Reports suggest this trade was an attempt to create financial flexibility, particularly with an eye on extending quarterback Brock Purdy’s contract. However, even with these cost-cutting measures, the 49ers are still struggling financially, facing a $77.7 million cap burden that continues to put pressure on their ability to operate effectively.

Salary Cap Woes Despite League Increase

The NFL’s 2025 salary cap has risen to $279.2 million, offering some relief to teams across the league. However, the 49ers remain in a tough financial position due to existing contracts and dead money. Currently, the team has an active cap spending of approximately $219.1 million, with star players like Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and Trent Williams accounting for a significant portion of the payroll.

One of the biggest financial commitments was the two-year, $38 million extension for McCaffrey last season, which is now being scrutinized as an example of possible cap mismanagement. This has led to increased speculation about the team’s decision-making process, especially as they continue to face significant financial constraints.

Brandon Aiyuk’s Future in Question?

Currently, the 49ers have only around $32.4 million in available cap space, a number that will shrink even further once they begin signing additional players. Rumors are circulating that the team may regret giving wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk a $120 million extension and could look to trade him to the Carolina Panthers to free up more cap space.

If this move happens, it would follow a pattern of major talent departures, with Deebo Samuel already gone and Aiyuk potentially on the chopping block. Many analysts believe that if the team offloads Aiyuk as well, it could significantly impact their offensive firepower and raise further concerns about their long-term competitiveness.

Massive Player Exodus Sparks Fan Backlash

The 49ers’ aggressive approach to cutting costs and reshaping the roster has already led to an exodus of key players. In this year’s free agency, the team has moved on from veteran fullback Kyle Juszczyk, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, safety Talanoa Hufanga, offensive lineman Aaron Banks, and others.
