SI grades Bills’ critical Terrel Bernard contract extension

The Buffalo Bills have prioritized securing their key players on long-term deals, and one of their latest moves is drawing high praise.

Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame reviewed all free agency signings so far and gave Buffalo an “A” grade for extending linebacker Terrel Bernard. The four-year, $50 million extension includes $25.2 million guaranteed, solidifying Bernard’s place in the team’s defensive core.

“Bernard has been a menace in the middle of the Bills’ defense over the past two seasons, recording 247 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and five interceptions,” Verderame wrote. “One of the more versatile linebackers in the league, he gives Buffalo an excellent combination at the second level alongside All-Pro Matt Milano.”

Bernard played a crucial role for Buffalo last season, especially in the absence of Milano, who missed all but four games. As a team captain, Bernard finished second on the roster with 104 tackles, adding five tackles for loss and tying for the team lead with two interceptions. Despite missing some time due to a strained pectoral muscle, he remained a key figure in the defense.

Since being selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Bernard has emerged as one of Buffalo’s top defenders. After a limited role in his rookie season, he broke out in 2023 with 143 tackles, five pass deflections, three fumble recoveries, and three interceptions while playing in every game.

Verderame highlighted the impact of Bernard and Milano as one of the league’s best linebacker duos, also noting the contributions of Dorian Williams. Together, they provide stability at linebacker through at least the 2026 season, with Milano and Williams under contract until 2027.

Buffalo has been proactive in securing its future, also locking up key players like Greg Rousseau and Khalil Shakir. While those signings are important, Bernard’s extension might be the most vital move of the offseason, ensuring the Bills maintain a strong defensive foundation.
