Patriots Turned Down Chance to Trade for Chiefs Star

The New England Patriots had a chance to make a major splash at the start of the offseason by acquiring one of the league’s top offensive linemen — but ultimately chose to pass on the opportunity.

Reports indicate the Patriots explored a possible trade for Kansas City Chiefs guard Joe Thuney but decided not to meet the Chiefs’ asking price.

The Patriots reportedly discussed a deal with Kansas City, but concerns about the compensation held them back. While it would’ve made sense for New England to address its glaring offensive line issues, there was hesitation about giving up a draft pick, especially if it was a 2025 fourth-rounder. With only eight selections in the draft and a long list of roster needs, the team was cautious about losing valuable draft capital. Still, it surprised some that the Patriots weren’t willing to match the 2026 fourth-round pick the Bears ultimately sent to Kansas City for Thuney.

Thuney’s trade to Chicago gives the Bears a much-needed boost to their offensive line. The Patriots, however, will now have to look elsewhere to find solutions for their own struggling front.

Offensive line problems plagued New England throughout last season, with a lack of talent and injuries to key players like Cole Strange and David Andrews contributing to their struggles. The Patriots ended up among the most-sacked teams in the league and finished near the bottom in offensive line performance.

With around $125 million in available cap space, the Patriots have plenty of financial flexibility to make significant upgrades in free agency ahead of the 2025 season. How they choose to approach rebuilding the offensive line — and the level of talent available — will be key factors in determining how successful their offseason will be.

Free agency negotiations are set to officially begin when the league’s legal tampering period opens at noon ET on Monday, March 10.
