With less than two days until the trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly shifting their trade focus from St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn to Philadelphia Flyers forward Scott Laughton.
NHL insider Brandon J. Sommermann shared an update on X, stating the Leafs have been one of the most aggressive teams in pursuing Laughton. He noted that Toronto’s 5-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights highlighted their need for more grit and heart, rather than adding more skill — something they already have plenty of.
#LeafsForever have been one of, if not most aggressive for Scott Laughton. Last nights 5-2 loss to Vegas showed TOR what they are missing… need more heart & soul over skill, which they have plenty of. Believe their focus is on Laughton right now over Brayden Schenn #LetsGoFlyers https://t.co/FTpNzYbgNJ

Sommermann’s post followed an earlier report indicating the Flyers have been engaging in ongoing talks with multiple teams, rather than just fielding interest. Laughton, now in the fourth year of a five-year, $15 million contract, is seen as a more affordable option than Schenn, whose $52 million deal runs through 2027-28. Despite not having a no-trade clause, the Flyers reportedly plan to consult Laughton about any potential move.
This season, Laughton has recorded 11 goals and 16 assists over 57 games.
NHL insider Darren Dreger also commented on Toronto’s interest, revealing that the Leafs nearly traded for Laughton two drafts ago, with a first-round pick as part of the deal — a price they ultimately decided not to pay at the time.
Meanwhile, speculation about Schenn moving to Toronto has been fueled by his connection with Leafs coach Craig Berube. The two won the 2019 Stanley Cup together in St. Louis, and Berube has openly praised Schenn, calling him “superhuman” after Schenn recently hit the 1,000-game milestone. Their close relationship has kept Schenn’s name in the mix, even as Toronto shifts focus to Laughton.
