Kalen DeBoer hiring wingman Ryan Grubb to revive Alabama football follows Nick Saban example

Let’s take a step back and revisit the peak of Nick Saban’s Alabama dynasty to highlight an important reality — even the best leaders benefit from a strong right-hand man.

During those dominant years, Saban had Kirby Smart by his side, playing the role of his trusted lieutenant. Smart was instrumental in crafting a relentless, punishing defense that became the hallmark of Alabama football, overwhelming opponents and leaving no room for mercy.

That’s not to say Smart made Saban — many would argue the opposite. But the truth is, both proved themselves as elite coaches and top-tier recruiters in their own right. Together, they formed a partnership that delivered four of Alabama’s six national championships under Saban.

Saban himself recognized Smart’s value, calling him “the best assistant coach we ever had” at SEC Media Days last summer.

Smart’s connection with Saban wasn’t limited to Tuscaloosa. He also worked under Saban at LSU and during Saban’s brief stint with the Miami Dolphins, building a working relationship that spanned multiple stops.

Lately, the dynamic between Saban and Smart has been on my mind — especially after Alabama’s new coach, Kalen DeBoer, wisely decided to reunite with Ryan Grubb.

Grubb will once again lead Alabama’s offense, and if there’s reason for optimism about DeBoer’s second season, it starts with this reunion. The duo worked seamlessly together in the past, and after spending a year apart where neither fully thrived, their familiarity could help DeBoer quickly adjust to life in the SEC.
