Is Miami Heat’s Terry Rozier Under Investigation for Fixing? Fact-Checking the Truth After Viral Footage Surfaces

Terry Rozier Under Federal Investigation for Alleged Match-Fixing

Match-fixing scandals have become all too familiar in the sports world. Traditionally, sports like boxing and wrestling have been the usual suspects, given how relatively easy it is to manipulate outcomes. However, team sports aren’t immune to this dark side of the game either. Recently, former Raptors player Jontay Porter was handed a lifetime ban for his involvement in game-fixing, and now, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier III finds himself under federal investigation for similar allegations.

Rozier has reportedly been under scrutiny since March 2023, back when he was playing for the Charlotte Hornets. Rumors surfaced about him deliberately affecting the outcome of a game against the New Orleans Pelicans. At the time, Charlotte’s season was already a lost cause, and Rozier played just under 10 minutes in the first quarter, recording five points, four rebounds, and two assists. He then left the game, citing a foot injury, and didn’t return for the remainder of the season. Since the Hornets were well out of playoff contention, Rozier’s early exit didn’t raise any alarms initially — but it coincided with some highly suspicious betting activity.

An NBA spokesperson confirmed that the league investigated the incident but found no violations of NBA rules. However, the matter has since escalated, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York launching its own investigation, with the NBA cooperating fully.

Reports suggest that Jontay Porter may be linked to Rozier’s case as well. According to the Wall Street Journal, Porter allegedly had inside information that led to large bets being placed against Rozier’s individual performance — specifically targeting his projected points and rebounds for that game. While details are still emerging, the connection between the two players has cast an even larger shadow over the situation.

Video Evidence Raises Eyebrows

Adding fuel to the fire, fans have circulated footage online, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing what some believe to be clear signs of Rozier deliberately underperforming. If Rozier had been hoping to go unnoticed, those clips are making that impossible.

The NBA has already made an example out of Jontay Porter, with Commissioner Adam Silver issuing a lifetime ban, emphasizing the league’s unwavering commitment to protecting the integrity of its games. Silver stated, “There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams, and everyone associated with our sport.” With that precedent set, Rozier could be facing serious consequences if the investigation proves his involvement.

Rozier’s Response

Despite the swirling allegations, Rozier has publicly maintained his composure, saying he’s in “a great headspace” and fully focused on basketball. He insists the investigation hasn’t distracted him from his duties with the Heat.

However, with federal investigators involved, this case is far from over. While Rozier’s fighting spirit has been a hallmark of his career — from his time with the Hornets to his current role in Miami — he may soon be battling for more than just wins on the court.
