ESPN Insider Confirms Kevin Durant & Anthony Edwards Link-Up as 2 Teams Threaten Timberwolves’ Plans

At this point, it appears increasingly likely that Kevin Durant could soon be on the move. Multiple reports indicate that the Phoenix Suns star is seeking a new team. The Suns’ current roster construction has failed to produce the championship-caliber results Durant desires, and at age 36, the two-time Finals MVP remains determined to chase another title. This has sparked speculation across the league and among fans about where Durant might land next.

Several teams have already expressed interest in acquiring Durant through a trade. During the trade deadline period, the Golden State Warriors explored the possibility of a reunion with their former star. However, they weren’t alone in their pursuit. The Minnesota Timberwolves also made a late push, engaging with multiple teams to try to orchestrate a deal for Durant. Although they were unsuccessful at the time, their desire to bring Durant to Minnesota remains strong.

According to NBA insider Brian Windhorst, the Timberwolves will once again explore trade discussions to acquire Durant in the upcoming offseason. Windhorst highlighted the close connection between Durant and Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards, which developed during their time together with Team USA at the Olympics. “Another small market team to watch — the Minnesota Timberwolves. Ant Edwards and KD have a very close connection from the Olympics. The Timberwolves tried to pull off a wild trade for KD at the deadline, and they’re expected to revisit those talks this summer,” Windhorst said on ESPN’s Get Up.

For Edwards, Durant is someone he holds in the highest regard — a player he’s openly called the greatest of all time. Their bond, which grew stronger during the 2024 Paris Olympics, could be a driving force behind Minnesota’s pursuit. Pairing the dynamic Edwards with Durant would be a dream scenario for Edwards, while also boosting Durant’s hopes of winning a third NBA title.

The Timberwolves have struggled to replicate last season’s success. One major weakness has been the absence of a consistently reliable secondary scorer. However, the team’s defense remains one of the league’s best, ranking fifth in fewest points allowed at just 109 per game. Adding Durant would bring elite scoring to complement Edwards and balance their strong defensive identity, potentially transforming Minnesota into a true contender.

Despite the Timberwolves’ clear interest, they aren’t the only team monitoring Durant’s situation. Several other franchises are expected to pursue him, including two strong contenders — the Houston Rockets and the Miami Heat.

The Rockets, another Western Conference team, were expected to add a star player earlier this season. However, head coach Ime Udoka believed the team wasn’t quite ready at that time. Since then, Houston has made significant progress, climbing to the fifth seed despite losing Fred VanVleet to injury. Key players like Alperen Sengun have taken major steps forward, with Sengun emerging as an All-Star-caliber center who excels both in facilitating the offense and scoring in the paint. Additionally, young talents like Jalen Green and Amen Thompson further enhance the team’s appeal to a player like Durant.

In the Eastern Conference, the Miami Heat are also likely to pursue Durant. After parting ways with Jimmy Butler, the Heat are positioning themselves to add a franchise-altering superstar in the 2026 free agency period — which coincides with the expiration of Durant’s current contract. If Durant remains with Phoenix until then, Miami would have the financial flexibility to make a significant offer.

The Heat’s well-known culture, which emphasizes discipline, work ethic, and consistent championship aspirations, has long been attractive to star players. Though Miami currently lacks a true superstar, their culture and competitive spirit could appeal to Durant. Additionally, Durant already has a strong relationship with Bam Adebayo from their shared experiences on Team USA rosters.

As the offseason approaches, the race to acquire Durant is expected to be one of the league’s most compelling storylines. Despite his age, Durant remains one of the game’s most prolific scorers and has also made strides in adjusting his reputation as a team player. The question now is: Which team will win the Kevin Durant sweepstakes.
