John Daly’s Ongoing Battle: Can His Legendary Willpower Overcome Injury and Lead to a 2025 Comeback?
John Daly’s career on the Champions Tour has been a saga of resilience and unwavering willpower. While he’s played in 142 tournaments with just one victory (2017) and a single runner-up finish, Daly’s determination and legendary status in the sport are undeniable.
But his body—much like his former rival Tiger Woods—has betrayed him over time. Daly admits, “I’ve never been able to really practice the way I want to practice,” revealing how injuries have constantly interrupted his career. Despite battling persistent pain from shoulder and knee surgeries, as well as cancer recovery, Daly remains competitive at 58.
Injuries and Setbacks: A Career of Struggles
In the past year alone, Daly had to withdraw from five tournaments due to recurring injuries. He faced flare-ups from an old hand injury at the Chubb Classic, and a thumb injury forced him to leave the PGA Championship after just one round. Add to this a knee injury that cut his participation short at the Open Championship and the Senior Open Championship, and it’s clear that Daly’s body is constantly at war with his spirit.
The Willpower vs. Body Battle
Despite the setbacks, Daly’s heart still burns with competitive fire. “I am still competitive,” Daly shared in a recent podcast, although he’s been battling an almost non-stop cycle of injury for years. His injuries—a separated shoulder, two knee surgeries, and multiple surgeries over time—have left him with limited practice ability. “I can’t hit 400 wedges from 100 yards anymore. Can’t stay on the putting green and hit 500 putts,” Daly lamented.
His road to recovery is ongoing, but Daly’s desire to return to the Senior Tour in 2025 is undeniable. After a hand surgery recovery, Daly’s next Champions Tour event is set for March 7, 2025, with the Cologuard Classic. But with his health consistently challenging his performance, the question remains: Will Daly’s legendary willpower be enough to overcome the physical barriers?
A Strong Desire for One Last Triumphant Return
John Daly’s primary goal as he moves toward 2025 is to recover fully and regain his ability to compete at the highest level. “I really wish I could get my game back to where I can compete on the Tour,” Daly said. The five-time PGA Tour winner is certainly not one to back down, but can his body hold up against the demands of professional golf?
