Hugh Freeze is ramping up his recruiting efforts after Auburn’s disappointing 5-7 finish in 2024. One of his biggest targets is Tristen Keys, a highly sought-after wide receiver in the 2026 class. Auburn looked to be gaining ground in the race for his commitment, but things have taken a dramatic turn as rival programs are making their own moves.

Alabama’s freshman quarterback, Keelon Russell, has stepped in to personally recruit Keys, telling him to “come home” to Tuscaloosa. Given Alabama’s strong track record of developing elite receivers like Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, and DeVonta Smith, the Tide presents a serious challenge for Auburn. On top of that, Alabama’s offense under Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb is an attractive option for any top-tier receiver.
However, Alabama isn’t the only competition. Tennessee has also emerged as a strong contender, thanks to its connection between Keys and Faizon Brandon, the top-ranked quarterback in the 2026 class. Brandon committed to the Volunteers back in August 2024, and their growing relationship could be a deciding factor in Keys’ recruitment. Tennessee’s coaching staff has been in constant communication with Keys, and he even made an unofficial visit to Knoxville in October.
With his list narrowed to six schools—Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Miami—the battle for Keys is heating up. SEC programs are pulling out all the stops, and his decision could ultimately come down to personal relationships and offensive fit. Auburn, Alabama, and Tennessee are all making compelling cases, but it remains to be seen who will come out on top in this high-stakes recruiting war.
