New competition for Flying Fijians

Fiji Set to Join Elite Rugby Nations in New Global Competition

World Rugby Chair Brett Robinson has confirmed that Fiji and Japan are on track to join a new top-tier international competition, The Nations Championship, which is set to launch in 2026. This move marks a significant step forward for Fijian rugby, solidifying their place among the world’s best teams.

The Nations Championship Format

The tournament will consist of two conferences:

1. European Conference – Featuring the traditional Six Nations teams.

2. Rest of the World Conference – Comprised of SANZAAR nations (New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and Argentina), along with Fiji and Japan.

Each team will play against all six teams from the opposite conference during the July and November test windows, culminating in a grand final in November to determine the champion.

Pathway for Emerging Teams

A second-tier competition, the Challenger Series, will run parallel to the Nations Championship. This series will introduce promotion and relegation starting in 2030, offering lower-ranked teams a chance to compete at the highest level.

What This Means for Fiji

Increased exposure against top-tier teams, improving Fiji’s global standing.

More competitive matches, allowing Fiji to develop talent and refine their playing style.

Potential Rugby World Cup impact, as consistent top-level competition will strengthen the team ahead of major tournaments.

With Fiji’s growing reputation in international rugby, their inclusion in The Nations Championship is a major milestone. It ensures they remain a key player on the world stage while providing an exciting new platform for Fijian rugby fans.
