Jalen Milroe’s Draft Stock Takes a Hit After Senior Bowl Struggles
Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe entered the Senior Bowl with high expectations, even drawing comparisons to Joe Burrow at one point. But after an underwhelming performance, his NFL stock is now in question. His struggles with accuracy and ball security have analysts raising concerns, and his hand size—measured at 8.75 inches—has only added fuel to the fire.
The Hand Size Debate: Legit Concern or Overblown?
NFL scouts often consider hand size a key factor for quarterbacks, particularly in handling the football in poor weather conditions. Analyst Nate Tice and Dane Brugler pointed out that anything under 9 inches is a red flag, and Milroe’s 8.75-inch measurement puts him below that unofficial threshold. His history of fumbles—six in 13 games—has only amplified those concerns.
However, some quarterbacks, including Jared Goff (9 inches) and Joe Burrow (9 inches), have managed to succeed despite questions about their hand size. The real issue, as analysts like ESPN’s Louis Riddick highlight, is Milroe’s inconsistency in intermediate throws and decision-making under pressure.
NFL Teams Split on Milroe’s Potential
While some believe Milroe still has first-round potential, others see a raw prospect in need of serious development. CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso remains optimistic, noting his arm strength and athleticism. However, ESPN’s Riddick warns that Milroe needs a patient team with a strong development program:
> “If you are a football team that doesn’t have patience and doesn’t have a good developmental program, do not draft him. Do not do that to the young man.”
The Cleveland Browns Factor
One team that could still take a chance on Milroe is the Cleveland Browns. Their analyst Tony Grossi has called Milroe an “odds-on favorite” for the team, and his connection with Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees could work in his favor. However, with doubts swirling over his readiness, Cleveland may have to reconsider their plans.
Can Milroe Overcome the Doubts?
Milroe’s Senior Bowl performance has created more questions than answers. His big-play ability remains enticing, but his struggles with accuracy, ball security, and decision-making could push him out of first-round contention. With the NFL Combine approaching, Milroe will need a strong showing to silence his critics and prove he belongs among the top quarterback prospects in the draft.
What do you think? Is Milroe’s draft stock in freefall, or does he still have time to prove his worth?
