The Fiji Airways Men’s 7s team currently leads the HSBC Sevens Series standings with 36 points after impressive performances in the tournaments held in Dubai and Cape Town.
Spain follows in second place with 32 points and is set to face Argentina in the Perth 7s semifinal, scheduled for 7:05 PM tonight. Depending on the outcome, Spain’s standing could change significantly. If Spain wins the title, they will earn 19 points, bringing their total to 51. However, if they lose the final, they will receive 17 points, which would bring their tally to 49.
If Spain finishes with 17 points and Fiji manages to win the 5th place playoff in Perth, both teams will end up tied at 49 points, sharing the top position in the overall standings.
Fiji’s performance at the Perth 7s has been inconsistent. They faced a surprising 24-17 loss against Uruguay but rebounded with a dominant 33-5 victory over New Zealand and a close 21-14 win against Kenya. Despite these victories, Fiji was defeated 19-0 by South Africa in the quarterfinals, ending their chances of progressing further in the main competition.
The outcome of Spain’s semifinal will play a crucial role in determining the overall standings. A title win would secure Spain the top spot, while a loss would result in a tie with Fiji for first place.
