Michigan on High-Alert as Ty Haywood’s Ties to Big 12 Underdogs Confirmed After FSU’s Blunder

Ty Haywood, one of the most sought-after high school football players in the class of 2025, remains uncommitted, sparking widespread interest in his recruitment. Standing at an impressive 6’5” and weighing 285 pounds, Haywood is ranked 18th overall and the 4th-best offensive tackle in the class, according to 247 Sports. With offers from top programs like Alabama, UCLA, Georgia, and Purdue, Haywood has officially visited six schools, leaving fans and analysts speculating about his ultimate destination. Recently, a surprising contender has emerged as a serious threat to land the Texas native: Texas Tech.

Haywood’s recruitment journey took an unexpected turn after he initially committed to Alabama. Despite his early commitment, he did not sign with the Crimson Tide during the early signing period, creating an opening for other programs to make their case. Currently, Michigan, Florida State (FSU), and Texas Tech are considered the leading contenders. An insider affiliated with On3 highlighted this development, saying, “Michigan has been seen as the biggest threat to flip him from Alabama, but Texas Tech, being an in-state program, has positioned itself well. Florida State has also remained in the mix, with hopes of getting him on campus for an unofficial visit before his decision.”

Michigan, known for its aggressive recruitment tactics, is reportedly pulling out all the stops to land Haywood. The same recruitment team that successfully signed Bryce Underwood is now fully invested in Haywood. Their commitment suggests that the Wolverines are a strong contender in this heated battle. Texas Tech, meanwhile, has surprised many by becoming a significant player in Haywood’s recruitment. With a reputation as one of the biggest NIL spenders this offseason, the Red Raiders are leveraging their resources and proximity to Denton, Texas—Haywood’s hometown—to make their case.

Florida State, while still in the race, faces a tougher challenge. The Seminoles used their official visit with Haywood in June 2024, leaving them unable to offer another visit unless it’s through an unofficial camp. With National Signing Day approaching on February 5, 2025, FSU’s chances are viewed as slimmer compared to Michigan and Texas Tech.

Experts believe NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals will play a critical role in Haywood’s decision. Programs with the financial backing to offer lucrative opportunities may have the upper hand in securing his commitment. Analysts have noted Texas Tech’s significant spending power this offseason, which could tilt the scales in their favor.

While Michigan and Texas Tech appear to be leading the pack, the race is far from over. Haywood’s impressive physical attributes, including his length and reach, make him a highly valuable asset for any team. Regardless of where he ends up, he is expected to make an immediate impact and contribute to his team’s long-term success.

FSU, Michigan, and Texas Tech all continue to make their case, but time is running out. As National Signing Day approaches, Haywood’s decision will be closely watched, with his choice likely to have significant implications for the college football landscape.
