Who is Ohio State’s backup QB for national championship? Closer look at Ryan Day’s options
Ohio State quarterback Will Howard’s left hand became a focal point during the team’s Cotton Bowl victory over the Texas Longhorns. Despite any concerns, Howard remained in the game throughout and appears to be at or near full health for the College Football Playoff (CFP) national championship against Notre Dame.
Howard, a fifth-year senior transfer from Kansas State, has played a key role in Ohio State’s push for the championship. This season, he set a career-high with 3,779 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and only 10 interceptions. Although capable of mobility, Howard hasn’t been an aggressive runner, logging just 169 rushing yards, which likely reduced his exposure to injuries.
Ohio State boasts a deep quarterback roster, but its reserves lack significant game experience. If Howard were unable to play in the championship, Devin Brown would step in as the backup quarterback. Brown, despite entering the transfer portal earlier in the season, chose to stay with Ohio State for the playoffs. He confirmed this decision after discussions with head coach Ryan Day and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, emphasizing his commitment to finish the season with the team.
Brown has been Ohio State’s backup quarterback throughout the CFP and saw limited action in seven games this season, primarily during late-game situations. He also played briefly in the playoff semifinal, completing one pass for six yards against Tennessee. Over his career with Ohio State, Brown has completed 27 of 48 passes for 331 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. He has also been sacked eight times and rushed 30 times for 37 yards with one rushing touchdown. Last season, Brown started the Cotton Bowl against Missouri but exited after completing four of six passes for 20 yards due to an ankle injury.
Another quarterback option for Ohio State is Julian Sayin, a freshman expected to take over as the team’s starter next season. Sayin has spent the year developing behind Howard and Brown. Although talented, Sayin’s lack of experience likely limits his role in the championship game unless it is already decided. This season, he threw for 84 yards and one touchdown.
Ohio State is set to face Notre Dame in the CFP national championship game on Monday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
