Jessica Pegula Backs Gauff’s Cheeky Take On Danielle Collins’ Spunky Attitude Amid Australian Open Controversy

Danielle Collins is a name that sparks polarizing opinions in the tennis world. Love her or hate her, the energy she’s bringing to the Australian Open this year is impossible to ignore. Known for her fierce on-court demeanor and unapologetic attitude, Collins has been stealing the spotlight—not just for her tennis but also for her fiery personality. Whether it’s her bold responses to critics or her dramatic exchanges with crowds, Collins is unapologetically herself, and her peers are taking notice.

Recently, fellow American Jessica Pegula weighed in on the ongoing buzz surrounding Collins. Following Pegula’s surprising defeat in the third round against Serbia’s Olga Danilović in straight sets, Pegula discussed various topics in her press interaction, including Collins. When asked about her compatriot’s behavior, Pegula echoed sentiments previously expressed by Coco Gauff, saying, “Danielle is going to be Danielle. I think that’s the perfect way to put it.”

Gauff, after her second-round victory over Jodie Anna Burrage, had spoken about Collins’ unique personality. She admired how Collins remains authentically herself, stating, “Danielle is going to be Danielle, and there is no one changing her, and she doesn’t care either. That’s something I can respect, someone who knows who they are. Just being authentically herself. If you know Danielle Collins, you know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Pegula supported Gauff’s view, adding that Collins’ honesty and individuality are great for tennis. She noted that tennis can sometimes feel rigid, and a personality like Collins brings a refreshing change. Pegula acknowledged that while her own demeanor is different from Collins’, she respects the American star’s boldness, stating, “Not everybody can do that, not everybody likes to do that, not everyone’s good at it. But if it helps you win, then you’re going to do that.”

Collins has been making headlines both for her performances and her interactions with the crowd. In her recent match against Destanee Aiava, which she won in three sets, Collins had a heated exchange with the audience. After being booed during her on-court interview, she responded with a cheeky remark: “I was thinking during the match, I’m out of here, I might as well just take that big, fat paycheck. So thank you, guys, thanks for coming out here and supporting us tonight!” Her bold attitude elicited mixed reactions, with some finding it entertaining and others deeming it unnecessary.

Interestingly, Novak Djokovic has also come out in support of Collins. The Serbian star praised her for handling the situation well, calling himself a “big fan” of her response. He said, “I loved her response. Everything she said on the court and off the court. I was a fan before, but now I’m a big fan. I think she handled it really well. I don’t think I would be that polite, but I know exactly the feeling. She was funny and smart.”

Collins’ unapologetic attitude has sparked debates within the tennis community. While some appreciate her refreshing approach to the sport, others believe her actions verge on being too dramatic. As the Australian Open progresses, it remains to be seen whether more such exchanges will occur or if the atmosphere will settle.
