Superhero’ Siya Kolisi issues warning to Springboks’ rising stars as captain insists he’s up for Rugby World Cup ‘fight’

Springboks captain Siya Kolisi has vowed not to relinquish his Test jersey without a fight, setting his sights on representing South Africa at the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The 33-year-old, who will be 36 by the next global tournament, remains confident in his physical and mental readiness to compete at the highest level.

Kolisi played a key role in South Africa’s impressive 2024 campaign, where they won 11 of their 13 matches and secured the Rugby Championship title for the first time in five years. Despite head coach Rassie Erasmus looking to build a squad for the future, Kolisi remains determined to hold on to his place.

“When I put on the green-and-gold jersey, I feel like a superhero. I feel like I can do anything, and I don’t want to lose that,” he stated. “The next person that takes it from me, they’re going to have to grab it, because I’m going to fight. And my body feels strong, so I think I can.”

Kolisi recently returned to South Africa after a brief stint with Racing 92 in France, which he admitted could have jeopardized his international career. Now back with the Sharks, he believes the move was crucial to maintaining his performance levels and continuing his Springboks journey.

“There’s no way I could do both,” Kolisi said, referring to balancing the physical demands of playing in France with his international commitments.

In addition to his on-field ambitions, Kolisi remains dedicated to his charity work through the Kolisi Foundation, established in 2020. He emphasized the importance of being in South Africa to fully understand and address the challenges faced by its communities.

“You’ve got to see what you’re working towards. You’ve got to feel it, be aware of what’s happening in the news in South Africa. Where can you help as an individual?” he explained.

Reflecting on life in France, Kolisi acknowledged the stark contrasts in infrastructure and daily life, noting that staying abroad could create a disconnect from the realities of his home country.

With his eyes firmly on the 2027 World Cup and a deep commitment to his community, Kolisi continues to embody resilience and leadership both on and off the field.
