Penn State Nittany Lions most to blame for heartbreaking CFP loss to Notre Dame

Penn State Football Falls to Notre Dame in a Historic College Football Playoff Semifinal

Penn State football faced No. 5 Notre Dame in a highly anticipated College Football Playoff semifinal that lived up to its billing as an instant classic. The matchup featured two storied programs, both seeking to break decades-long national championship droughts. Notre Dame last claimed the title in 1988, while Penn State’s most recent triumph came in 1986 during an undefeated campaign.

The Nittany Lions, led by head coach James Franklin, entered the semifinal after dominant wins against SMU and Boise State. However, their championship hopes were dashed when Notre Dame sealed a thrilling 41-38 victory with a clutch 41-yard field goal by placekicker Micah Jeter in the final moments.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Penn State concluded an impressive season. However, the defeat highlights the program’s ongoing struggle to take the next step from good to great. Familiar issues re-emerged, leaving key players and the coaching staff with much to prove heading into 2025.

Drew Allar’s Struggles Against Notre Dame’s Defense

Junior quarterback Drew Allar entered the semifinal with momentum following a strong performance in the Fiesta Bowl against No. 9 Boise State. In that game, Allar threw for 171 yards and three touchdowns, leading a crucial 75-yard drive to secure the win. However, against Notre Dame’s elite secondary, Allar failed to replicate that success.

In the semifinal, Allar completed only 12 of 23 passes for 135 yards and a costly interception. The turnover, which occurred deep in Penn State territory during the final minute, set up Notre Dame’s game-winning field goal. Although Allar displayed flashes of his immense potential throughout the season, his accuracy issues were evident in this high-pressure matchup.

Allar, a highly touted talent and potential first-round NFL draft pick in 2026, will return for his senior season. While he has shown the ability to lead the Nittany Lions to success, improving his consistency and accuracy in critical games will be essential for both his development and Penn State’s aspirations.

Looking Ahead

The loss to Notre Dame does not overshadow the progress Penn State made in 2024, but it serves as a reminder of the challenges the program faces in its quest for a national title. With Drew Allar and other key players returning, the Nittany Lions have the talent to remain competitive. However, translating that talent into postseason success will require addressing the shortcomings exposed in Miami.

As Penn State prepares for 2025, the focus will undoubtedly be on refining their execution in critical moments and maximizing the potential of their roster. If they can rise to the occasion, the Nittany Lions may finally take the leap toward national championship contention.
