Pete Alonso’s free agency remains a key storyline in baseball. The four-time All-Star, known for his prolific home run-hitting ability, has yet to secure the long-term contract he and his agent, Scott Boras, have been pursuing. However, recent developments suggest progress in discussions with his current team, the New York Mets.

According to former Mets general manager Jim Duquette, Alonso and his representatives have approached the Mets with a specific offer. Sources indicate that Alonso’s camp has proposed a three-year deal featuring opt-out clauses, but this offer is exclusive to the Mets. Duquette shared, “According to league sources, Pete Alonso’s camp has offered the Mets a three-year deal with opt-outs. This deal is only available to the Mets right now.”
Alonso has been linked to other teams during the offseason, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Angels. However, the mutual interest between Alonso and the Mets suggests a potential reunion may be on the horizon.
The proposed contract structure, which includes opt-outs, provides flexibility for both sides. Duquette noted that this arrangement could demonstrate Alonso’s commitment to the Mets while allowing him to re-enter free agency if desired. He explained, “He has a chance to put up big numbers and then decide if he wants to go back out on the free agent market or the Mets could try to sign him to a longer-term deal.”
Alonso is coming off a challenging 2024 season by his standards, finishing with a .240 batting average, 34 home runs, and 88 RBIs. While still solid numbers, they fell short of expectations for the power-hitting first baseman in a contract year.
The recent addition of Juan Soto to the Mets’ roster could provide Alonso with more opportunities to improve his performance. A strengthened lineup could boost Alonso’s stats, potentially positioning him for a more lucrative contract if he chooses to exercise an opt-out clause.
If Alonso re-signs with the revamped Mets, the combination of a fresh lineup and his proven abilities could lead to a rebound season in 2025, further solidifying his value as one of the league’s premier pow
er hitters.
