Coco Gauff’s United Cup Win Over Iga Swiatek Sparks Optimistic Predictions From Ex-Pro Ahead of 2025 Season

Coco Gauff has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past year. The young tennis star, who struggled with her first serve in the past, has significantly improved her game and confidence. Reflecting on her struggles in October last season, Gauff had expressed frustration after losing to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Wuhan Open semifinals. However, her journey since then has been extraordinary.

The turning point began in Riyadh, November, where Gauff clinched the WTA Finals title with improved court movement and a more consistent serve. This momentum has carried into 2025, with her leading Team USA to a second United Cup title. Her latest triumph came in the United Cup final against Poland, where she defeated Iga Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam winner. Gauff displayed unmatched athleticism in the match, earning praise from former WTA pro Rennae Stubbs.

On January 5, Gauff faced Swiatek in the United Cup title match and secured a convincing 6-4, 6-4 victory. This win marked her second consecutive victory over Swiatek, following their encounter during the group stage of the WTA Finals. Stubbs, impressed by Gauff’s performance, called her the “MVP of the United Cup” and predicted bright prospects for her at the Australian Open.

In a January 7 podcast episode, Stubbs commended Gauff’s refined playing style, particularly her ability to dominate rallies without missing forehand shots. Highlighting Gauff’s speed and athleticism, Stubbs stated that there are few options left for opponents to exploit against her. She noted that Gauff’s ability to retrieve balls and hit winners from difficult positions gives her a significant edge.

Stubbs also compared the styles of Gauff and Swiatek during their United Cup match, pointing out that Gauff’s forehand adjustments and net-play willingness made the difference. She emphasized that players who struggle with movement at the net are particularly vulnerable against Gauff. Stubbs predicted Gauff, along with Elena Rybakina, Sabalenka, and Swiatek, as likely semifinalists for the upcoming Australian Open.

Gauff’s recent form has drawn widespread attention. Stubbs previously predicted her success at the WTA Finals, emphasizing the importance of reducing double faults. Gauff has since addressed these issues, making her a formidable contender on the court.

Looking ahead to the Australian Open, Gauff remains optimistic. Reflecting on her achievements, including leading the USA to United Cup victory, she expressed confidence in her abilities. She described her current mindset as a key factor in her success and believes she is among the best players in the world. Last year, Gauff reached the semifinals of the Australian Open but was halted by Sabalenka. With her current form, she appears well-positioned to go even further this time.

Stubbs reiterated her belief in Gauff’s potential to win the Australian Open, calling her one of the tournament favorites. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if Gauff can maintain her winning streak and claim her first Grand Slam of the season.
