Watch: Jake McCabe’s fight with Garnet Hathaway forces Leafs D-man to exit game after slamming head onto ice

In the closing moments of the first period, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe and Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway engaged in a heated altercation behind the net. The conflict stemmed from an earlier incident in the period when Hathaway collided with Leafs goaltender Dennis Hildeby. Unhappy with Hathaway’s actions, McCabe confronted him, leading to the fight.

As tensions escalated, Hathaway eventually dropped his gloves to engage. However, the scuffle ended unfavorably for McCabe, who found himself overwhelmed during the exchange. The situation took a troubling turn when McCabe fell and struck his head on the ice. Despite attempting to regain his footing, he struggled and ultimately required assistance to leave the ice.

The Toronto Maple Leafs later announced that McCabe had sustained an upper-body injury during the altercation and would not return for the remainder of the game. Despite the setback, the Maple Leafs managed to secure a 3-2 victory over the Flyers in overtime.
