Florida Football has approached the transfer portal with a measured strategy, adding only four players initially—one of the lowest tallies in the SEC. However, the Gators recently bolstered their roster by adding a fifth transfer, focusing on addressing a key area of need at safety.
The latest addition is Adrian Maddox, a hard-hitting defensive back from UAB. Maddox began his college football career at Alabama State, where he played for two seasons before transferring to UAB for the 2024 season. His performance at UAB showcased his ability as a coverage safety, primarily excelling in roles as a nickel or STAR defender rather than a traditional free safety. Notably, Maddox did not allow any touchdowns in the 2024 season and recorded four pass breakups.
While Maddox’s missed tackle rate of 17% is a point of concern, his tackling style sets him apart. When he does make a tackle, it’s often with notable physicality and aggression, drawing comparisons to Trikweze Bridges due to his fearless approach to contact and his downhill playmaking ability.
A native of Georgia, Maddox had previously visited programs like Georgia, Louisville, and Arkansas before committing to Florida. He joins the Gators with one season of eligibility remaining, aiming to make an impact in the 2025 season.
