Elias Pettersson finally breaks his silence on trade rumors, future with Canucks amid J.T. Miller drama

Rumors of a feud between Vancouver Canucks forwards J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson were a frequent topic in December, with reports suggesting tension between the two players. The situation even led to speculation about potential trades involving either or both of them. Insiders have commented on the matter, with sources suggesting that the Canucks are actively exploring trade options for the two forwards.
In a recent segment, a trusted insider revealed that the Canucks are thoroughly assessing the trade market for both Miller and Pettersson, stating, “The Canucks are definitely, definitely looking at the market for both players, and you should be prepared for all outcomes.”
In a one-on-one interview, Pettersson addressed the rumors about his potential trade and his future with the team. While acknowledging the speculation, he maintained that he focuses on what he can control. “I’m aware of it, I’ve heard it. But then it’s like, can I control it? No. So that’s where I’m at. I’m trying not to think about it,” he remarked. He also suggested that better performance and team success might quell the rumors, adding, “I’m sure it will go away if I play better and if we win.”
When asked about his desire to stay with the team, Pettersson expressed his commitment, emphasizing, “Yeah, of course. That’s why I signed here.” He outlined his focus on improving his game to contribute to the team’s success, saying, “Put pucks in the net and win games.”
Pettersson recently returned to practice after missing four games due to an upper-body injury and is expected to play during the team’s upcoming road trip.
The future of Pettersson with the Canucks remains a topic of debate, especially as the team struggles to find consistency. With a record of 18-12-8, they are close to a wild-card spot in the Pacific Division but have lost six of their last eight games.
The Canucks’ general manager has weighed in on the situation, expressing belief in Pettersson’s potential but also pointing out the challenges he faces. The GM noted that Pettersson needs to mature and meet the expectations placed on him, adding that anything, including a trade, remains possible.
Pettersson, who signed an eight-year, $92.8 million contract extension in March 2024, has faced significant pressure to deliver. The GM highlighted the mental and physical challenges of striving for long-term success, stating, “Life just gets harder. You haven’t really accomplished anything. You’re not even halfway there [to winning a Stanley Cup].”
The Canucks’ management remains focused on building for long-term success and views Pettersson as a potential No. 1 center for the franchise.
