“If we panic, it means we are not prepared” – Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta opens up on Gunners’ plans for January transfer window

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reassured fans that the club will only pursue signings in the January transfer window if they are confident in the decision. The Gunners, currently dealing with long-term injuries to key players like Bukayo Saka and Ben White, may consider entering the market, particularly to strengthen the right wing. The team currently lacks a left-footed attacking replacement for that position.

Arteta emphasized the importance of thorough preparation in the transfer process. He stated, “If we panic, it means we are not prepared. A big factor is preparation. When you are well-prepared, your decisions are better and carefully processed.” He added, “We will decide if we want to sign a player based on performance and the circumstances. The preparation has been done, and we are ready to act if needed. However, we also know we have an excellent squad capable of competing with any team when players are available.”

Despite the injuries, Arsenal’s academy players have stepped up effectively. For instance, Miles Lewis-Skelly has performed admirably at left-back in the absence of Riccardo Calafiori and now seems to be integrated into the first team. Similarly, Ethan Nwaneri, an attacking midfielder by trade, impressed on the right wing during Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Brentford on January 1. How the team sets up against Brighton & Hove Albion on January 4 will be closely watched.

In terms of potential signings, Arsenal is reportedly interested in Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson. According to reports, the Gunners would only proceed with the transfer if the conditions are right. Ferguson, however, has struggled this season, managing just one goal in 12 Premier League appearances. Additionally, West Ham United is also reportedly interested in Ferguson, exploring a potential loan deal for the 20-year-old striker.

While Arsenal has faced challenges in the striker position, Gabriel Jesus’ recent form could reduce the urgency for reinforcements. The Brazilian forward has scored six goals in four matches across all competitions, raising confidence in his capabilities to lead the line.

Arteta remains cautious but optimistic, reinforcing the notion that any January transfer activity will be strategic and focused on long-term benefits for

the team.
