Elliotte Friedman shares unfiltered opinion on Maple Leafs Prospect Easton Cowan after Canada’s disappointing quarterfinal exit

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan has faced significant criticism following his underwhelming performance for Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships. Drafted 28th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, Cowan managed only three points (one goal, two assists) in five games during the tournament. This follows a similar performance in the 2023-24 World Juniors, where he registered just two points (one goal, one assist).

Adding to the frustration for Canadian fans is Team Canada’s back-to-back quarterfinal losses to Team Czechia, resulting in consecutive fifth-place finishes at the World Juniors—a rare and disappointing outcome for the storied hockey nation.

Cowan’s lack of production has drawn criticism from fans, some even calling for him to be traded. However, hockey analysts have been quick to defend him. One notable commentator expressed that while Cowan struggled during the tournament, it would be unwise for fans or the Maple Leafs organization to lose faith in the young player. The commentator highlighted that trading him now, when his perceived value is at its lowest, would not be a logical move.

Despite the criticism, Toronto’s management is unlikely to waver in their belief in Cowan’s potential. He remains a top prospect for the franchise, with hopes pinned on his ability to contribute in the NHL.

Cowan will finish the 2024-25 season with the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he has been impressive, tallying 28 points (15 goals, 13 assists) in 20 games. This follows a standout 2023-24 OHL season where he accumulated 96 points (34 goals, 62 assists) in 54 games, ranking sixth in overall scoring.

Cowan’s consistent success in the OHL has fueled excitement among Maple Leafs fans, who are eager for fresh talent to join the team during the prime years of their star players. The young forward is expected to receive significant opportunities in training camp and preseason to earn a spot on the Leafs’ roster for the 2025-26 NHL season.
