American hurdler Alaysha Johnson recently shared her excitement about being recognized by tennis star Coco Gauff during the Olympics. In a video shared on Instagram, the 28-year-old hurdler recounted how Gauff surprised her by recognizing her for her unique style, including her frozen glasses and self-designed competition uniforms.
Johnson had initially approached Gauff on behalf of sprinter Aleia Hobbs, who wanted a photo with the tennis player. To her amazement, Gauff acknowledged Johnson, saying, “I know who you are. You’re the girl that wears the frozen glasses and makes her own uniform.” Johnson admitted she was starstruck, especially considering Gauff’s status as the highest-paid female athlete of the year with earnings of $30 million. She humorously offered to become Gauff’s assistant, joking about making uniforms for her.
Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, reacted positively to the interaction. He reshared the video on his Instagram story, expressing his support for both athletes. Ohanian has been a strong advocate for women’s sports and has taken significant steps to promote them, including founding Athlos NYC, an all-female track meet held at Icahn Stadium.
In December, Ohanian participated in Sportico’s Women’s Sports Panel, where he predicted the emergence of a billion-dollar women’s sports franchise by 2030. He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing women’s sports through initiatives like investing in the NWSL team Angel City FC and supporting university sports prog
rams.
