“That was a little biased”: Cam Skattebo makes his stance clear on controversial no call on targeting after Texas Loss

One of the most dramatic games in College Football Playoff history unfolded on Wednesday as the Texas Longhorns faced the Arizona State Sun Devils. Late in the fourth quarter, with Arizona State mounting a comeback and threatening to upset Texas, a pivotal play significantly shifted the momentum of the game.

On a critical third-and-15 with about one minute remaining, Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt completed a 10-yard pass to wide receiver Melquan Stovall. However, Stovall was immediately hit by Texas defensive back Michael Taaffe. The hit required Stovall to receive medical attention, and the officiating crew reviewed the play for potential targeting. Despite the review, the referees determined the hit was not targeting.

Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo later shared his perspective on the controversial no-call during an interview. He described watching the play unfold and noted the contact appeared to involve the crown of Taaffe’s helmet striking Stovall’s chin. Skattebo expressed frustration over the inconsistency in targeting rulings, questioning the fairness of player protection in the game. While acknowledging the officials’ decision, he emphasized hope for Stovall’s recovery.
