As the 2024 college football season nears its conclusion, the spotlight is on the evolving dynamics of the sport. Alongside college football, high school football is also experiencing significant developments, with notable players like Malachi Toney capturing attention. The wide receiver from American Heritage High School has recently added another prestigious accolade to his impressive resume: the MaxPreps Award.
This isn’t Toney’s first time in the limelight. He recently committed to the Miami Hurricanes, joining Mario Cristobal’s highly competitive wide receiver roster. His performances and accolades speak volumes about his talent. Ranked No. 52 nationally at his position and No. 44 overall in the state by 247Sports, Toney has built a strong reputation with his exceptional skills. Known for his elite catching ability, Toney has consistently demonstrated his prowess on the field.

In high school, he led the American Heritage Patriots to victory in the 4A state championship, defeating Jones High School 40-31. During that game, Toney achieved impressive stats: completing 15 of 18 passes for 188 yards and scoring two touchdowns. His contributions didn’t go unnoticed, earning him recognition as Florida High School Football Player of the Year. Throughout the season, Toney recorded 58 receptions, 12 touchdowns, and over 1,000 receiving yards, bringing his career total to 28 touchdowns.
Despite his achievements, Toney’s journey to Miami was not without challenges. Initially, he decommitted from the Hurricanes on October 3 but later recommitted on October 28. His decision to rejoin Miami added to the anticipation surrounding his future. By early December, after resolving some final paperwork, Toney officially joined the Hurricanes, much to the delight of the coaching staff.
Toney’s high school career has also included participation in national events. He will play in the East vs. West matchup at the Alamodome in San Antonio on January 11, 2025. He was also among the 100 Navy All-Americans honored during the nationwide Road to the Dome tour. On December 4, Toney received recognition during a virtual jersey presentation for the All-American Bowl.
While Toney’s teammates have taken diverse paths—running back Byron Louis signing with the Florida Gators and safety Xavier Thomas joining Florida State—his decision to join Miami has cemented his role as a key player for the Hurricanes. Miami’s coaching staff views him as a potential star, with comparisons being drawn to standout players like Cam Ward.
As Toney’s college football journey begins, questions arise about his potential. Will he become the next big name in college football, or will he simply be remembered as a high school sensation? His achievements so far suggest he’s on a path to greatness.
