FRU mourns Mataitoga’s passing

The Fiji Rugby Union is grieving the passing of Waisea Mataitoga, a significant figure in the development of rugby in Fiji, who died over the weekend.

Mataitoga played an instrumental role in Fiji Rugby’s growth, contributing extensively to its development programs. During the 2022-2023 season, he served as the manager of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, collaborating closely with head coach Saiasi Fuli to elevate the team’s performance on the international stage.

Earlier this month, Mataitoga demonstrated his unwavering commitment to fostering young talent by stepping into the role of manager for the SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 team. This position allowed him to focus on nurturing future rugby stars and advancing the sport within the country.

He also made notable contributions as the manager of the Vodafone Deans Queen Victoria School Under-18 team, leading them to victory and showcasing his leadership and mentoring abilities.

To honor Mataitoga’s legacy, members of Fiji Rugby, including staff, board members, and several Under-20 players, gathered to pay their respects in a traditional Fijian condolence ceremony (ireguregu). This heartfelt tribute underscored the profound impact Mataitoga had on the rugby community and beyond.

Mataitoga’s deep passion for the sport and his dedication to mentoring young athletes have left an indelible mark on Fiji’s rugby landscape. His passing represents a significant loss not only for the sport but for the entire nation.

The rugby community extends its deepest condolences to Mataitoga’s family during this time of mourning.
