Wallabies legend Drew Mitchell has praised Rassie Erasmus’ innovative approach with the Springboks in 2024, positioning them as leaders in world rugby.
After returning to the role of head coach for the Springboks this year, Erasmus focused on integrating new talent into the team. Despite the core remaining from the 2019 World Cup-winning squad, with many players now over 30 years old, Erasmus used the season to introduce 50 players, achieving 11 wins from 13 Tests and ending the year at the top of the world rankings.
Mitchell noted that the extensive player rotation was a strategic decision, allowing the team to test young players in high-pressure matches. This approach not only strengthens the squad’s depth but also prepares ready-made replacements for future tournaments, including the 2027 World Cup.
Another significant aspect of the Springboks’ success in 2024 was their evolved attacking style under new assistant coach Tony Brown. Brown was given the freedom to implement a more dynamic playing style, incorporating running rugby into South Africa’s game plan. This shift allowed the team to play both a structured, 10-man game when necessary and an expansive, transition-style football, which features players like Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Aphelele Fassi at full-back, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. This versatility in playing style has enabled the Springboks to open up opposition defences and capitalize on transition opportunities more effectively.
