Wakeham aims to inspire young Fijians through NFL Pathway

Jeneiro Wakeham is blazing a trail as the first Fijian to join the NFL International Player Pathway (IPP) Program, a move that represents more than just personal achievement. The former Suva Grammar student and professional rugby player is determined to inspire a new generation of Fijian athletes to explore opportunities beyond rugby.

Wakeham, who previously honed his skills in Fiji Rugby’s academy and played professionally abroad as a second-row lock, is now embracing a 10-week training program with the IPP to transition into American football as an offensive line tackle. His journey mirrors that of Philadelphia Eagles lineman Jordan Mailata, who successfully made the leap from rugby to the NFL.

“I really want to inspire and open doors for the younger generation,” Wakeham said. “Rugby is not the only sport that you can use to get out of Fiji. There are other sports out there.”

The NFL International Player Pathway Program, designed to identify and develop elite global talent, provides participants like Wakeham with the chance to compete at the highest levels of American football. His milestone marks a significant moment for Fijian athletes, broadening the scope of opportunities available and potentially sparking a new wave of interest in the NFL across the Pacific.

As Wakeham prepares for this transformative experience, he’s not only making history but also reshaping perceptions about what Fijian athletes can achieve on the world stage.
