Floyd Mayweather Dragged In as Gervonta Davis’ Legacy Questioned in Money Debate

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis recently announced his retirement from boxing, expressing that he is tired of the sport and prefers to “make money and stay out the way” while living a quiet, unseen life. However, boxing commentator and YouTuber Show Bizz The Adult has offered a different perspective, claiming Davis’ dissatisfaction stems not from money but from a lack of legacy in his career.

The 30-year-old Davis is set to fight Lamont Roach on March 1st, 2025, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, defending his WBA lightweight title. Davis also suggested that 2025 would mark his final year in the ring. Despite his impressive accomplishments and being regarded as the “face of boxing,” Show Bizz argued that Davis’ frustrations stem from a resume lacking big-name opponents, which affects his legacy.

According to the YouTuber, this dissatisfaction may also explain Davis’ strained relationship with his former mentor and promoter, Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather has often been criticized for cherry-picking fights, primarily facing top boxers after they were past their prime. Show Bizz stated that Davis likely reached a point where he questioned his hunger for success, despite achieving financial success. “Gervonta looked up and then started beefing with Floyd. He looked up and was like, ‘I’m still hungry,’” Show Bizz said, implying that money alone cannot satisfy a fighter’s desire for greatness.

Show Bizz used Davis’ situation as a cautionary tale for other boxers, emphasizing that financial gain cannot fulfill the deeper motivations that lead fighters to pursue boxing. “This should prove to all of the fighters out there that money isn’t the bill, and it’s not F the fans, and it’s not get to the bag. You won’t be happy,” he explained, urging fighters to remember why they began boxing in the first place.

Meanwhile, former world champion Shawn Porter has weighed in on Davis’ upcoming fight against Lamont Roach. Porter suggested that Roach’s familiarity with Davis—stemming from their amateur boxing days—could make the March 1 clash more competitive than anticipated. Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Porter explained that Roach has seen Davis’ speed and power up close, which gives him a unique advantage. “Your first time seeing that kind of speed and… the overall makeup of a Tank Davis is surprising to most fighters. It won’t be surprising to Lamont Roach,” Porter said. While Davis is the clear favorite, Porter believes Roach could capitalize on his experience and rise to the occasion if he can endure Davis’ power.

Ultimately, the ongoing conversation highlights two key questions: is Gervonta Davis’ legacy being overshadowed by Floyd Mayweather’s influence, or is he forging his own path in boxing? Show Bizz The Adult believes that Davis’ legacy remains incomplete, as his career lacks notable victories against top-tier opponents. Whether or not Davis will address these concerns in the remainder of his career remains to be seen.
