The New York Mets have made a major splash in the MLB off-season by signing four-time All-Star Juan Soto, edging out competition from their cross-town rivals, the Yankees. With Soto secured, attention has shifted to other prominent free agents, including Alex Bregman. The Houston Astros’ star third baseman, despite struggling with injuries last season, remains a valuable player, having posted five seasons with at least 20 home runs.
Astros General Manager Dana Brown commented on Bregman’s situation, stating that discussions about his future remain unchanged. Brown acknowledged that the team has been focused on various matters while Bregman appears to be exploring other opportunities. The challenge for the Astros is retaining Bregman amid strong interest from other teams, as more than four franchises are reportedly in the mix.
Yankees and Mets Rivalry Intensifies
Bregman has become a focal point of the off-season, with insiders naming the Yankees, Mets, Astros, and Red Sox as the primary contenders vying for his signature. Additionally, the Detroit Tigers have emerged as a potential dark horse in the race. Both the Yankees and Mets are highly motivated, seeing Bregman as a key piece for their respective rosters.
The Mets, in particular, face uncertainty at the corner infield positions. With Pete Alonso nearing free agency and third baseman Mark Vientos struggling defensively, Bregman’s addition would fill a critical need. Bregman’s defensive prowess was highlighted by his AL Gold Glove win in 2024, a stark contrast to Vientos’ struggles, reflected in his -7 Outs Above Average. If the Mets secure Bregman, Vientos would likely move to first base.
The Yankees, meanwhile, view Bregman as an ideal solution to address both offensive and defensive voids, especially after losing Soto. However, acquiring Bregman will not come cheap, as he is expected to command a contract exceeding $200 million. The Astros have reportedly offered $156 million, setting a high bar for competing teams.
Red Sox’s Unique Approach
The Boston Red Sox have taken an unconventional approach in their pursuit of Bregman, reportedly envisioning him as a second baseman instead of his usual position at third base. This decision is influenced by their commitment to Rafael Devers at third. Despite Bregman’s Gold Glove performance at third base, his versatility makes him open to a positional change.
Internal debates within the Red Sox organization, however, have complicated their pursuit. Manager Alex Cora and team president Sam Kennedy are strong advocates for signing Bregman, praising his all-around skills and championship-caliber impact. Conversely, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and others are more cautious, citing concerns over Bregman’s declining offensive performance. While his OPS averaged .891 from 2018 to 2022, it dropped to .804 in 2023 and further to .768 in 2024.
Cora remains optimistic, stating that Bregman is a “complete player” who could significantly contribute to a title-contending team. Whether the Red Sox can resolve their internal disagreements and make a serious bid for Bregman remains to be seen.
The Stakes
The off-season competition for Alex Bregman could reshape the rosters of several MLB teams. Whether the Yankees, Mets, Astros, Red Sox, or even the Tigers prevail, the outcome will have a significant impact on the balance of power in the league.
