Man United ‘reach agreement’ over Ruben Amorim’s first major signing as manager

Manchester United have reportedly reached a “verbal agreement” to sign Paraguayan left-back Diego León from Cerro Porteño. The 17-year-old is expected to join the club in July 2025, marking the first potential signing of the Ruben Amorim era. Although the deal has not yet been officially confirmed by United, journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that the transfer will involve an initial fee of $4 million, with an additional $1 million in easy add-ons, and over $3.5 million tied to the player’s future performances.

United’s left-back position has been a problem area, especially after Luke Shaw’s injury ahead of their recent 2-0 loss to Arsenal. Amorim has had to use Diogo Dalot in a left-wing-back role despite his usual position on the right, and Tyrell Malacia has started in the left-back spot for recent matches. Given León’s age, his minutes at United would likely be managed as he develops.

León has impressed in his debut season at Cerro Porteño, scoring a winning goal on his competitive debut in August. Known for his pace and physicality, he had also attracted interest from other Premier League clubs, including Manchester City and Arsenal, but it appears United have secured his signature.

In a recent interview, León spoke about the excitement of possibly joining a top European club, saying he had been preparing for such an opportunity and is focused on his current season with Cerro Porteño. His move to Manchester United would align with the club’s recent strategy of targeting players aged 26 or younger.
