Devin Brown transfer portal prospects: 3 potential destinations for the Ohio State backup QB

Devin Brown has decided to enter the transfer portal after three years at Ohio State. Despite still being part of the team for their College Football Playoff game this month, he is seeking a new team where he can secure a starting role and play significant minutes. Brown’s college career has been marked by close quarterback battles, having lost to Kyle McCord in 2023 and Will Howard this season. Although he has shown glimpses of potential, he has struggled to get consistent playing time, accumulating 325 passing yards and three touchdowns, along with 37 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Devin Brown (33) warms up prior to the NCAA football game against the Michigan Wolverines at Ohio Stadium in Columbus on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024.

With Will Howard departing after this season, it was thought that Brown might be next in line, but head coach Ryan Day’s recent praise of freshman quarterback Julian Sayin suggests otherwise. Facing no guaranteed QB spot, Brown has decided to explore other options through the transfer portal. He still has two years of eligibility left, so let’s consider three potential landing spots for him:

1. USC Trojans: The Trojans, struggling in their first year in the Big Ten with a 6-6 record, are in need of a quarterback upgrade. Miller Moss and Jayden Maiava haven’t lived up to expectations, and Brown, with his two remaining years of eligibility, could be a low-risk, high-reward option. Lincoln Riley could utilize him effectively, and Brown would have a capable wide receiver corps to target, including Makai Lemon, Zachariah Branch, and Ja’Kobi Lane.

2. Indiana Hoosiers: If Brown decides to join Indiana, it would be a blow to Ohio State, who has not shown much interest in him for next season. Indiana’s new head coach Curt Cignetti has had an impressive start, going 11-1 in his first season. With Kurtis Rourke leaving, there is an opportunity for Brown to step in and establish himself as the successor.

3. Colorado Buffaloes: Even with Deion Sanders’ future at Colorado uncertain, he has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to the team. If Shedeur Sanders enters the NFL draft, Colorado will need a new quarterback. Brown could be a strategic two-year project under Sanders’ leadership, allowing him to develop and build his reputation. This move could also boost his profile and potentially increase his NIL earnings.
