Jordan Chiles Discloses How Simone Biles Saved Her From Darkest Phase of Gymnastics Career in 2018

Jordan Chiles has faced numerous challenges throughout her gymnastics journey, enduring criticism and obstacles that tested her resilience. At just 17, she revealed enduring harsh racial attacks, with people hurling slurs and criticizing her physique. Chiles was mocked for being “too manly” or “too muscular” for gymnastics and was even warned about her diet, as critics suggested she needed to remain smaller. Expressing her frustration, she recalled, “You’re telling me I’m not going to have muscles when I’m throwing my own weight around? It’s like, God created this body for a reason, so I’m going to use it as much as I can.”

Despite these challenges, Jordan pressed forward, determined to pursue her dreams. Her parents, inspired by her potential, named her after basketball legend Michael Jordan, a testament to their belief in her greatness. However, in 2018, her career hit a low point. After being a member of the U.S. team since 2013, she was not selected for the senior national or World Team. This setback left her feeling defeated and questioning whether gymnastics still had a place for her.

In a recent interview, Jordan opened up about that difficult time, saying, “In 2018, I was struggling mentally, physically, emotionally, and I began to doubt if this work still had a place for me. The weight of expectations, the fear of failure, the pressure of being perfect, and the hurt caused by being overlooked made me question everything.” She also reflected on how the system felt unwelcoming and limiting. “I learned that the system wasn’t built for people who looked or even acted like me. For so long, I was told that in order to achieve my dream, I had to fit into a space that felt unnatural.” Feeling trapped by expectations and systemic pressures, she began to consider stepping away from the sport entirely.

Just as Jordan was on the brink of giving up, her best friend, Simone Biles, stepped in and offered her unwavering support. Jordan credits Simone for giving her hope and a new perspective on her dream. “It was my best friend Simone who gave me hope and a new path to my dream when I was about to give it up,” she said. Their bond became a lifeline for Jordan, demonstrating the transformative power of friendship during tough times.

Jordan and Simone have shared a unique understanding of each other, particularly around mental health challenges. Jordan once noted, “We understand each other whether we do have to talk to each other or not,” highlighting their deep connection. Their friendship has been a source of strength, especially during moments of public scrutiny. For instance, during the Olympics, Jordan faced backlash over a medal controversy that was not her fault, leading to relentless trolling. The online abuse forced her to deactivate her social media accounts, but Simone was there to help her navigate the storm.

Simone supported Jordan both privately and publicly. In their conversations, Simone encouraged her to process her emotions, saying, “You know what, Jordan, you have to feel all these feels. Don’t let these emotions stop you. This will be the healthiest way to get all of this out.” Additionally, Simone publicly advocated for justice for Jordan, reinforcing her solidarity and the importance of uplifting one another in the face of adversity.

Through all the challenges, Jordan’s resilience and Simone’s steadfast friendship have formed a remarkable partnership, proving that mutual support and determination can overcome even the most difficult circumstances. Together, they exemplify the power of camaraderie and perseverance in navigating the pressures of elite sports.
